Trish Gilbert serves as the International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers' Association (IFATCA) Executive Vice President Americas and was recently elected to another two-year term.
Previously she served 12 years (4-terms) as the National Air Traffic Controllers Association’s (NATCA) Executive Vice President. During her time in that position she helped lead and oversee NATCA’s comprehensive efforts to build successful working relationships with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Department of Transportation (DOT), the aviation industry, the AFL-CIO, and members of the U.S. Congress that resulted in excellent progress on aviation safety. Her efforts included serving on many boards and committees: the FAA’s Drone Advisory Committee (DAC), the FAA/NATCA Collaborative Steering Committee, the Aero Club of Washington Board of Governors, the National Aeronautic Association Board of Directors, Director of the NATCA Charitable Foundation, the Vice Chair of the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) Air Traffic Services Committee and IFATCA's representative to the Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems panel (RPASP) at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Overview
The Americas Region Communications Committee is established to enhance and streamline communication within the International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers' Associations (IFATCA) Americas Region. This committee will provide valuable insights to the Americas Region Executive Vice President (EVP) regarding the state and future direction of internal and external communications. The committee will consist of a chair and members appointed by the Americas EVP appointed annually in conjunction with regional meeting. The chair will manage the committee and report to the Americas EVP.
Duties of the Americas Region Communications Committee
The committee’s responsibilities include:
- Supporting and guiding the Americas Region on communication strategies.
- Coordinating with the EVP on necessary internal or external communications.
- Taking initiative on standard or repetitive communications.
- Maintaining an updated log of all communications on behalf of the Americas Region.
- Keeping an updated record of all communication-related expenses.
Specific Tasks and Procedures
- Use the email address socialmediaAMA@ifatca.org to set up Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook accounts.
- Designate a point of contact (POC) for posting and establish a backup POC.
- Set up shared Google Docs and a shared calendar for posting dates. Content will be provided by the EVP via the regional communications group WhatsApp
- Content from others in the region can be sent to the email address or forwarded to the group chat by any committee member.
- At least two people per region are assigned (member of) the World Communications team to coordinate with the between the entities.
- Ensure regional posts complement world-level posts by sharing relevant world posts at the regional level.
- Develop a 30-day rolling calendar for regional social media posts.
- Schedule a minimum of two posts per week, collaboratively at the regional level with the EVP.
- Include the EVP’s and RVP’s schedule of events in the posting calendar.
- Connect with each Member Association (MA) in the region to identify their social media contacts and create an informal network for story sharing.
- Encourage MAs to follow and engage with regional social media.- Help MAs without social media presence to set up accounts, with support from the EVP, RVPs and the communications team.
- Generate content ideas such as past victories, events, and celebrations.
- Use email and WhatsApp to explain the roles and activities of the world and regional communications teams.
- Inform the region about where to send content, providing email addresses and WhatsApp contacts for the team members.
- EVPs should share their calendar with the team, providing photos and brief descriptions of each meeting to the group WhatsApp.
- Organize meetings with other regional stakeholders to create content with signposts and links to more information.
- Format social media content for meetings: include title, location, photo, and a brief overview.
- Identify and interact with other relevant organizations at the regional level.
- Utilize in-person meetings as opportunities to gather materials for communication purposes.
- Plan and think strategically about these opportunities to enhance regional communication efforts.
